LET'S PAINT A MAILBOX

WITH ACRYLIC PAINTS

(Painting on Mailboxes and other Metal)

Painting plastic is one thing. Metal is another.

Painting metal items is an art that is currently in trend with people who love to do craftworks. As a long-lasting and inexpensive means, most people have opted to use acrylic paint because it dries fast and is easy to clean-up. This includes painting utensils, coffee pots, and other household items. Referred to as tole painting, you can use acrylic paint to decorate such metal items and transform them into artful pieces; hence, by painting your utensils, you are not only increasing its perceived value as a utensil but as an art form as well. Personalizing these items may also place a higher value on the quality of your home. Just think about the possibility of having almost everything in your home follow a theme or a design. Let's say that you chose sunflowers as your current theme. You can paint doorknobs with bright yellow petals or metal stools with a bouquet of sunflowers any other flower that suits your taste.

Design ideas flow with painting mailboxes and finding the right design is the biggest challenge. But before applying acrylic paint, completely clean the mailbox first by using a steel wool. Remove of all the dust and dirt so as to apply a smooth coating. If your mailbox already has paint, make sure to strip it off. You can use paint strippers, but be careful because it might be too strong for the metal and might cause its corrosion.

After you're done cleaning the mailbox, you can now sketch your design with a pencil. If it's you're first time painting, use a stencil from your local hardware store.  It's quick and easy to use. But if you're an artist, go ahead, do your thing, and personalize your mailbox with your signature strokes. You can choose any design you want from roosters to birdhouses or any type of flower which favors your set-up.

Another good thing about using acrylic paint on metal mailboxes is that you can sand the paint off. Especially for inexperienced painters, if you make a mistake you can just erase the paint off and start painting again.

When using acrylic paint, you can use a brush or an airbrush. Use small brushes fit for painting miniature figurines. Or an airbrush with the acrylic paint mixed with enough water to get the right consistency. The medium you use depends on the item you are planning to paint.
